Nokia and Beijing Just Top to build Beijing's government shared TETRA network for use during the 2008 Olympics

Nokia and Beijing Just Top Network Communications Company Limited have signed an formal contract to build the first phase of the Beijing municipal government's shared Digital Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) communications network, using Nokia's TETRA system with IP backbone.  The shared network has been listed as one of the top 60 major projects for the Beijing municipality this year.

The shared network fulfils the dispatch communication requirements of the "Digital Beijing " and "Digital Olympic" programs, as well as special measures needed for Beijing's emergency rescue system.  The network will allow seamless dispatch services in all provinces around Beijing and the Bo Hai Bay area, covering all venues for the 2008 Olympic Games.

"We are very proud to make our contribution to 'Digital Beijing' and the 'Digital Olympics'," says David Ho, Vice President, Nokia Networks China.  "The Beijing Government Shared Network will enable the Chinese government to realize its goals for dispatch communications service for the 2008 Olympic Games.  The network will fully meet the requirements for the Olympic organizing committee.  We firmly believe that we have the full competency to successfully accomplish timely equipment delivery, installation and construction, as well as after-sales service and therefore provide safe network operation."

Under the terms of the contract, the Beijing municipal government shared network will adopt Nokia's advanced TETRA IP technology.  Nokia will deliver the latest TETRA switching equipment - Nokia DXTip - as well as base stations and dispatcher stations.  In addition to network equipment, Nokia will also provide its Network Deployment Package, which covers implementation, commissioning and project management; the Nokia technical support package, which maintains post-network roll-out; and a package of training services to help develop staff competency.

The TETRA network in Beijing will become China's largest and most advanced digital trunking communication network with the richest functionality.  It will also serve as an important platform for both dispatch information and wireless communication for another key project for Beijing, the Integrated Emergency Response Service system.  The network offers a general data platform for government organizations in Beijing, and with its unique VPN function can be used to build a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for each organization. The result means that each member organization has the equivalent of its own private dispatching communications network.

The system will be implemented in the second half of 2003.  The first construction phase of the entire network, supporting 50,000 subscribers and completely covering Beijing metropolitan area, nearby key counties and major parts of the main highways, will be completed in the first half of 2004.  The second phase will be finished by 2006, when the network will support 150,000-200,000 subscribers.
