Stam, a citizen of The Netherlands, grew up in Washington DC. After gaining an MBA from Delta University, he started his career as a marketing specialist with Sperry Marine Systems in Charlottesville, Virginia. Back in the Netherlands, he held marketing and product management positions at General Electric Plastics and Philips Lighting.
