BALTIMORE, April 29, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Electronic Systems sector today announced the 24 statewide winners of its first annual Engineering Scholars program, which will provide a total of $240,000 in college scholarships this fall to high school seniors across Maryland interested in studying engineering.
The new scholarship program is intended to support promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an engineering-related field. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student in an approved engineering program. The funds can be used for tuition, books, lodging and meals.
"Northrop Grumman is pleased to sponsor this unique new scholarship initiative aimed at encouraging some of the state's best and brightest students with an interest in math and science to pursue the engineering professions," said Robert P. Iorizzo, president of the company's Electronic Systems sector. "We were especially impressed with the outstanding qualifications of all of the applicants from across the state, which made the final selection process quite challenging for our scholarship review committee."
A committee of Northrop Grumman employees selected the Engineering Scholars winners. To be eligible, scholarship applicants had to be a resident of Maryland and a graduating senior this spring from a public or accredited private high school in the state. Applicants must also have achieved a minimum composite SAT score of 1,100 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 (grades 9-12).
"With the significant need for engineers in Maryland, this innovative scholarship program is extremely beneficial in encouraging outstanding Maryland students to select engineering as a course of study," said Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools. "We applaud Northrop Grumman for setting an example that others can follow." Following are the names of the students from each of Maryland's 23 counties and the city of Baltimore who will be receiving individual merit-based scholarships of $10,000 during an awards reception and dinner being hosted by Northrop Grumman at the Historical Electronics Museum in Linthicum, Md., on May 28:
