Nokia enables new business opportunities and alluring mobile services by deploying a cohesive Java(TM) technology for application development and download

San Francisco, CA, JavaOne 2003, June 9th, 2003 --- Nokia (NYSE:NOK), the global leader in mobility, announced today that its Series 60 Platform will support Java Mobile Information Device Profile 2.0 (MIDP), the latest specification for mobile application downloading. Also, Nokia introduced the Nokia Developer's Suite for J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), Version 2.0, with MIDP2.0 support, for mobile application developers.

The MIDP2.0 specification, developed and implemented by the Java Community Process (JCP), offers improvements in communications, security, multimedia and user interface capabilities, resulting in new applications with radically enhanced features, such as rich graphics and security. They will increase the possibilities to build dynamic applications for enterprises, banking, multiplayer games and numerous other areas.

"Over 10 million mobile Java applications are downloaded per month, and the number is rapidly growing. More than 50 operators have deployed Java technology and all leading handset vendors have committed to the technology as well," said Timo Poikolainen, Vice President, Nokia Mobile Software. "We are pleased to be among the first industry leaders introducing products and solutions based on the jointly developed MIDP2.0 specification. In mobile communications, Java technology is the enabler in providing a true mass market for the downloadable application business," he continued.

The MIDP2.0 specification will also offer a comprehensive set of harmonized APIs to ensure economies of scale and consistent development across different device classes. For developers this will provide a non-fragmented, cohesive platform to create applications that will run on all MIDP 2.0-compliant handsets.

New Series 60 features - unique benefits
Series 60 now supports Java MIDP 2.0 with the backwards compatibility to the previous MIDP 1.0 version. This support ensures a smooth evolution from existing Java applications to new and richer applications. The Java implementation in Series 60 brings enhanced graphics functionality, Bluetooth APIs, support for various secure HTTP connection types, advanced multimedia APIs, and messaging APIs. And to ensure seamless application usability, Series 60 also uses the same application installer and application menu for Java and native Symbian applications.

The Series 60 Platform has also been enhanced with several other new features that are designed to add value for licensees, developers, and operators, and to further expand the user experience. For example, Series 60 offers expanded possibilities for personalization. A user will be able to switch between different sets of icons, wallpapers, screensavers, background bitmaps, and color schemes offered by an operator or other service portal. For messaging, Series 60 now provides enriched presentation capabilities in MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) through enhanced SMIL**.

The Series 60 Platform is a terminal software product for smart phones that Nokia licenses to handset manufacturers. The platform has rapidly become the market leading software for smart phones with licensees representing approximately 60 percent of global handset market. Panasonic, Samsung, Sendo, Siemens and Nokia have licensed the Series 60 Platform.

The Nokia Developer's Suite for J2ME Version 2.0 offers developers enhanced functionality and standardizes development. The suite is available in two versions, supporting both Windows and Linux platforms, and can be downloaded for free at www.forum.nokia.com/tools.
**SMIL: Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language
