The MIDP 2.0 standard, developed and implemented by the Java Community Process, provides a cohesive platform that allows developers to create applications that will run on all MIDP 2.0-compliant handsets. It also unlocks significant feature enhancements in a number of areas.
Most significant among these, developers can now implement additional communications protocols beyond HTTP, including Bluetooth and Short Messaging Service (SMS). These protocols can now be easily integrated into any type of J2ME programs, from games to enterprise applications.
MIDP 2.0 support also provides the ability to launch a J2ME application via an external event such as an incoming message, or on a time-based schedule set by the application. This functionality might be used, for example, in a stock ticker application that alerts the user when a stock price reaches a certain level, rather than always depending on the user to repeatedly open the application to check the stock price.
In addition, MIDP 2.0 supports standardized HTTPS communication for secure transmission of sensitive information. Also new in the security area is the ability for the publisher to digitally sign applications which can then be verified by the end user using the public/private key infrastructure to maintain application integrity. Developers creating applications that deal with financial or other private data now have a stable, consistent foundation on which to base their development.
As with previous versions of the suite, Version 2.0 enables fast, simple development in a standalone environment or as an integrated solution with existing Java IDEs such as Sun Microsystems' Sun One Studio, Mobile Edition and Borland's JBuilder.
Version 2.0 of the suite also includes a new emulator based on MIDP 2.0, allowing developers to work in a MIDP 2.0 environment throughout their entire application lifecycle, from concept through testing to deployment. The Nokia 7210 MIDP SDK, featuring MIDP 1.0 implementations, will also be included. Additional Nokia phone SDKs are available for download from the Forum Nokia web site.
Nokia handsets embracing MIDP 2.0 technology and displaying its full functionality will be announced throughout the remainder of this year.
