All Voices from the Altar Speak the Same Truth -- Woman Tells her Story of Battling Adversity as a Member of the Clergy

DRY BRANCH, Ga., June 11, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- For Rev. Gwengale Parker, being called into the ministry was something she couldn't ignore. As she followed her calling to preach God's will, she encountered difficulties. In Hear Me (now available through 1stBooks), Parker talks about the widespread controversy of women in the pulpit and describes her own experiences with adversity.

One of the most debated issues in the church is whether women have an equal place as clergy. In an effort to spread awareness that the calling of a woman by God is no different than that of a man, Parker's book offers an inside look at this issue. She hopes to convey that being called by God isn't about the will of the individual, it is about doing God's will.

Parker does not wish to change anyone's mind, only show people that judging women for being ministers impedes on someone's desire to follow in Jesus' steps, no matter which sex they are. The world God created is an ever-changing one. Traditions such as these should be constantly reevaluated, as long as all is done in God's name, the author writes.

Anyone interested in women in the clergy will be captivated by the rare glimpse into the heart of a woman struggling to do what many strive to accomplish daily ( follow God's purpose for them to the best of their ability. Parker hopes this book will open minds and hearts to better understanding.

Parker is associate minister at Lizzie Chapel Baptist Church in Macon, Ga., where she was raised. She attended Georgia Southwestern College, Wesleyan College, Macon State College and Christian Life School of Theology. She and her husband, Charles, have four children and two grandchildren. She is also the author of Perfect ... Why Not? (also available through 1stBooks).
