 WHAT:     June 19 is the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Lou 
           Gehrig, the New York Yankee baseball player who died of 
           amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou 
           Gehrig's Disease.  During the last decade, researchers
           have made significant advances in learning more about
           this progressive neurodegenerative disease that claims
           some 5,000 lives in the United States each year.  Dr.
           Bruijn asserts that scientists have made the most
           progress in the search for a cure for ALS in the last 10
           years since the disease was identified in 1869.
