Skanska secures environmental project in Brazil valued at SEK 305 M


STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 4, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska has been awarded the contract to design and construct a sulfur treatment plant at a refinery in Brazil. The contract is valued at USD 38.3 M -- approximately SEK 305 M. The customer is Refap S.A. The contract is included in order bookings for the second quarter of 2003.

The assignment includes planning, construction and installation of two parallel sulfur treatment plants at the existing oil refinery in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The purpose of the sulfur treatment plant is to reduce sulfur emissions from the refinery. Sulfur treatment is a key process to reduce emissions that cause acid rain. The total capacity of the treatment plant is 98 tons per day. The sulfur will be recovered for commercial use. The project also includes a residual gas sub plant, as well as a wastewater treatment sub plant.

The project will be implemented by Skanska Latin America, which is the new name of the Business Unit Sade Skanska. Skanska Latin America is one of Latin America's leading construction companies. The unit's sales for 2002 amounted to SEK 2.3 billion, with an operating margin of 7.9 percent.

The company has a strong position in the energy sector. Approximately 50 percent of its sales derive from assignments in the oil, gas and energy sectors, within which Skanska Latin America assumes responsibility for the construction and maintenance of production plants, power transmission and pipelines throughout Latin America, primarily in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Venezuela. The largest clients include Petrobras, Dow Chemical, Pluspetrol, Pan America Energy and Repsol.
