A True Band of Brothers -- World War II's forgotten heroes remembered in new book

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., July 11, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- World War II still evokes strong, conflicting opinions. Should one feel a sense of pride and power after many innocent lives were lost and thousands of young men were plucked from their youth? Author Kenneth Lenke is an unsung soldier, who left his playground and went to war. In his autobiographical book, U.S. Army Serial Number 37531447 (now available through 1stBooks), Lenke endeavors to remind readers of the drama of World War II and the tales surrounding its valiant combatants through the insightful and humorous perspective of a non-commissioned officer.

The book traces the transition of a young draftee, who traded his Eagle Scout badge for dog tags and left the tall prairie grasslands of the Flint Hills of Chase County, Kan., to go to battle in Europe. It is a complete narrative of his war experience, from the grueling battles to the daily grind, and it provides a human touch to the otherwise grim account. Lenke pays poignant tribute to the veterans' bravery, deserving of respect and commendation, in the midst of their ordeals.

U.S. Army Serial Number 37531447 is specifically dedicated to the memory of those who committed themselves to fight for peace and freedom and whose names now appear at a granite marker in front of the Chase County Courthouse. Lenke offers a priceless legacy to the sons and daughters of veterans, military personnel and war history buffs.

Born and raised in Kansas, Lenke earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Emporia State University. A former instructor in physics, he retired from the Scottsdale Public School System and is a first time author. He developed a keen interest in the culture of the American Southwest Indians, particularly their flute music, which he has performed for various audiences. A current resident of Scottsdale, Ariz., Lenke has also done volunteer work for the Phoenix Indian Medical Center.
