I Like Ice Cream in My Coffee -- New Novel Examines the Conscious and Subconscious Minds of Characters in Small Town

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., July 16, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The human mind is a complex instrument. It can cause people to see things that are not there, experience things that never happened and even make someone forget who they are. In the new novel, I Like Ice Cream in My Coffee (now available through 1stBooks), by Diney DeRuy, a young woman with amnesia turns a town upside down as they try to figure out her past while dealing with their own psyches.

DeRuy invites her readers into a mystery with the first installment of a five-part series. It all begins when an injured woman wanders into a small Texas town suffering from amnesia. The small population of 3000 takes her in as the woman seems to fit in quick and easy, perhaps too easy. Strange things begin occurring, but not before the doctor, Joe Young, falls in love with her, which causes his twin brother and county sheriff, John Young, to worry. He remembers his brother's nervous breakdown years ago following his wife and baby's deaths.

Unable to watch his brother once again struggle, especially since this woman is the cause of resurfacing memories in his brother, John is determined to prove her deception about her amnesia. First, however, the sheriff must face his own psychological problems from a rough past before the situation in Pineville becomes dangerous, physically and mentally. Unfortunately, the townspeople are already shaken. He handles the situations and events terribly wrong and the woman disappears. They will have to leave Pineville to get to the truth, a dangerous road out of home and into the unknown.

Born and raised in Pittsburg, Kan., DeRuy graduated from Pittsburg State University with a bachelor's in social science. She currently resides in Springfield, Mo. DeRuy says her writing style is "intentionally blunt, but fun, easy to understand," which she feels makes her books "more appealing and entertaining to read." I Like Ice Cream in My Coffee is her first book and the first in a series of five.
