Nokia chosen by collaborative cancer research organisation to secure its corporate network

The Swiss Institute of Applied Cancer Research (SIAK) has chosen Nokia to supply IP network security appliances for its network of research databases.  The Nokia solution integrates market-leading VPN-1®-FireWall-1® software from Nokia global technology partner, Check Point Software Technologies (NASDAQ: CHKP).

SIAK, headquartered in Bern, conducts clinical and epidemiological research on different types of cancer. The initial treatment of Swiss cancer patients is carried out across nine regions in Switzerland. From here the results are sent to the SIAK administration centre in Bern and the results are collected in various databases.

As well as conducting clinical studies for the treatment of patients and undertaking research as part of the continuing drive to find a cure for cancer, the organisation conducts statistical analysis and publishes its results. These are often brought to various conferences for discussion and debate. Data security is mandatory given the data contains sensitive patient information required to remain confidential by law.

"Given our strong requirements, we looked at similar Nokia-based solutions at other organisations and found that they were really satisfied with the performance of the Nokia systems.  Our Nokia solution now forms the major component of SIAK's security and security levels have improved noticeably,"says Christoph Pauli, head of IT at SIAK.

The organisation favours "best-of-breed" solutions like that offered by Nokia and has based its decision on some key criteria such as ease of connection, quick and simple access and ease of use to support Virtual Private Network (VPN) expansion.

"Our managed service provider had sold a lot of Nokia solutions and all their customers are really satisfied.  Additionally, the Nokia solution has excellent features such as a very user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) and easy integration with Windows-based IT infrastructures, like those at SIAK," adds Christoph Pauli.

The Nokia VPN solution is helping to serve over 70 users at the SIAK co-ordinating centre.  In addition, partners, such as doctors, are enabled access to research results on the password-protected members-only section on the Internet site.  Another organisational target is the remote data entry of information and this is an area for critical network security. Currently, the data is collected, written on paper-based case report forms and sent to the data centre at Bern for manual system entry.  The institute's new pilot project will enable remote data entry over leased line to the data centre. This may then be rolled out to multiple sites and projects.

"Network security technology enables sytems of critical importance. Technology must also be neither complacent nor complex whilst providing the trust required.  We are proud to offer our solutions to such an important cancer research and treatment project," says Ernie Jones, Nokia Internet Communications vice president of sales, Europe, Middle-East & Africa.
