Skanska selected as design/builder for new U.S. Census Bureau headquarters, project value estimated to be USD 288 M, SEK 2.4 billion; Skanska to include USD 145 M, SEK 1.2 billion, in third-quarter order bookings


STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 21, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska USA (Other OTC:SKSBF) Building has been selected by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to complete the design of and construct the U.S. Census Bureau's new headquarters facility at the Suitland Federal Center in Suitland, Maryland, near Washington, D.C.

The GSA estimates the contract's total value to be USD 288 M, or SEK 2,359 M. Skanska will include USD 145 M, or SEK 1,194 M, in order bookings in the third quarter for the value of the project's first phase. The project's second-phase award will be exercised by the GSA pending approval of funding in the FY04 U.S. Federal Budget, which is expected in the fall. Work will begin next month and is scheduled to be completed in March of 2007.

HKS Inc. of Dallas, Texas, will serve as the design consultant for the project. Skanska's share of the project's overall value is 96 percent.

The new Census headquarters will consolidate approximately 6,000 Census employees now located at Suitland and five separate locations. It will be constructed in two phases and include 1,400,000 gross square feet of offices, meeting areas, cafeteria and support spaces as well as two parking garages accommodating 3,100 cars.

This is another in a series of projects Skanska USA Building has recently completed or is currently managing for the GSA, including U.S. Courthouses in Nashville, Tennessee, El Paso, Texas and Jacksonville, Florida; the renovation of the Charles E. Bennett Federal Building in Jacksonville; the Environmental Protection Agency National Computer Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Health Laboratory.
