How Many Toads Does a Woman Have to Kiss? -- New novel's protagonist walks the fine line between love and hate, passion and violence

HIXSON, Tenn., July 30, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- As the year 2000 approached, many people worldwide expected some sort of calamity to befall the planet: a catastrophe of epic proportions, perhaps. In the end, the famous New York City ball fell without incident; computers continued operation and Valentine's Day decorations and candies replaced the much-anticipated New Year's Eve 2000 favors. In short, it was "business as usual" for most individuals, including protagonist Sarah Callahan -- or so she thought. In Debra Stiles' new novel, He Called Her Mister (now available through 1stBooks), Sarah encounters her very own "Y2K" glitch: love.

Sarah meets handsome, charming and successful Sam Swanson through a dating service and their connection is instantaneous. He lavishes her with gifts, affection and elaborate trips to exotic destinations, such as the Caribbean Islands and Hawaii. With everything money and power can buy, Sarah is living out a fairytale. It all seems much too good to be true. Is it?

She is deeply in love with Sam, the man "that hung the moon." However, Sam is hiding dark secrets. Just as quickly as she is swept off her feet, she finds her world crashing down around her. Caught in a web of violence and abuse, Sarah is torn between her heart and her mind as she confronts an unexpected enemy.

"He Called Her Mister is a story of a woman who dared to live above her means and discovered that life is life no matter what level you're on, only to discover that being on the lowest level is sometimes better than at the top," Stiles writes.

A compelling and touching work, Stiles' novel shows the depth and breadth of love, while reminding readers of the unspeakable evils of violence and abuse that can emerge in the hearts of even the most cherished loved one.

Stiles is a resident of Tennessee and has written and published several short stories and poetic works. She is a member of the Poet Society and has written two additional books, entitled The Songs of Mister and The Land of All. She has two children and two grandchildren and enjoys traveling with her husband. Their adventures together fueled her imagination in writing He Called Her Mister. The self-proclaimed "original mister," Stiles is presently working on another novel, Fantasies of a Married Woman.
