Combining Cutting-Edge Science With Ancient Wisdom -- Author Offers Theory on Global Conflict, Personal Happiness

ARCADIA, Calif., August 6, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- In a new way of examining the perplexing questions about life and the nature of evil, author Dinesh Verma uses his background in medicine, the latest neural research in consciousness, virtual reality, as well as ancient wisdom from Indian Vedas, the Bible and the Koran to form a theoretical framework for the origin of "intelligent life" in his new book, Relative Happiness (now available through 1stBooks).

Verma, an ophthalmologist, offers philosophical reasons for the current ongoing conflicts around the world and the personal struggles people face daily. He presents a coherent blueprint for a way of life that would lead to absolute happiness for all people instead of the stressful, competitive society of today. Opening with a puzzling case of a patient with unexplained blindness, Verma discusses the importance of "time of birth" and how it relates to the exposure of light to retinal pigment Melatonin.

Taking mind-body medicine to a new level, Verma draws from his experiences practicing medicine in places such as India, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States. A captivating look into today's world through a different lens, Relative Happiness reaches out to those disturbed by the religious conflicts in the world, who cannot reconcile their faith with scientific logic and who wish for a world that is fair and just. His vision as a scientist and insight as a scholar have created a new way of looking at today's often-confusing world.

Verma is currently associate professor of clinical ophthalmology at the University of Southern California and is director of distance education and tele-opthalmology at The Retina Institute of Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles. Trained in India and the United Kingdom, he served as a visiting associate professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to carry out research in virtual reality simulation of eye surgery. Although he is the author of many papers and ophthalmology works, this is his first book.
