BETHPAGE, N.Y., Aug. 27, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Dr. Harry Armen, director of Technology Development for Northrop Grumman's (NYSE:NOC) Bethpage-based Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare Systems business unit, has been nominated to become president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Dr. Armen is a resident of Glen Cove.

ASME will confirm Dr. Armen's nomination in November, and will serve as the association's president beginning in June 2004. He will serve one year as president, then a second year as immediate past president. The rotation is designed to preserve the continuity of leadership at ASME.
Founded in 1880, ASME International is a worldwide nonprofit educational and technical organization with a membership of 120,000. It is a premier organization for promoting the art, science and practice of mechanical engineering throughout the world.
A career-long member, Dr. Armen has served on numerous ASME boards and committees. Beginning in 1991, he served for 18 months in ASME's Congressional Fellows program. As an advisor to Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), he helped formulate and implement legislative initiatives designed to help improve U.S. economic competitiveness through the establishment of a national technology policy.
As ASME's new president, Dr. Armen has several goals for the organization: "I'd like to continue soliciting volunteer leaders who will develop and deliver the organization's extensive programs and services," he said. "I'd also like to make ASME membership more attractive to recent mechanical engineering graduates by establishing programs that will promote their professional development."
Dr. Armen has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The Cooper Union. He also has a master's in civil engineering and a doctorate in engineering sciences from New York University. He joined Northrop Grumman after completing his doctoral studies and has held both supervisory and staff positions at the company for the past 38 years. As Technology Development director, he is responsible for the planning and execution of research programs that support strategic corporate goals.
Dr. Armen is the author or co-author of more than 40 archival papers and technical reports. In addition, he holds two U.S. patents in automotive engineering. He is also a licensed professional engineer in the state of New York.
The Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare Systems business unit is part of Northrop Grumman's Integrated Systems sector.
