The Lost Monster Tales -- Five adventure stories to spark children's fantasies

EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah, Sept. 18, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Can ordinary kids become superheroes? In The Lost Monster Tales (now available through 1stBooks) by author Julie Helm and artist Debbi Cary, a gang of unlikely heroes will tickle the imagination of children and young adults. With five different enchanting tales, The Lost Monster Tales transports readers from fantasyland to breathtaking adventures that include a giant green worm, a big, colorful, weird-looking snake, a hungry Bigfoot, a very large lake monster, and eleven nearly frozen fairies.

Helm splendidly relates the special relationships children form with unusual, but remarkable animals. In the story called Monster in the Lake, Helm introduces the reader to Brigham and his younger brother, Nicky as they embark on a fishing trip that brings them face to face with a humongous lake monster. The Winter Fairies, meanwhile, is a story that makes the reader believe in winged magic through the eyes of Becca and her sister, Amber. In contrast, Worm Hole is not about superpowers, but an enchanting and heartwarming story about Brianna and her younger brother, Steven, who are both trying to help a big, fat, green worm find her real home. An amusing narrative, Jared's Pet Snake is about one boy's determination to find the perfect pet. Jared is willing to do anything, just to have a snake of his own. Another scary animal lurks in Nannie's barn in The Night Something Nearly Ate Nannie, a delightful display of wits as Nannie discovers a hungry Bigfoot.

The Lost Monster Tales may be fictional, but the lessons it imparts are all about kids discovering how to rely on their unique capabilities to crawl out of unexpected crises. Julie Helm's radiant portrayal of both children and "monsters" inspires readers not to be afraid of physical differences, and moreover, Helm proves that kids can sometimes act as responsible adults.

An award winning short story writer, Julie Helm is the author of science fiction and fantasy stories that have been published in children's magazines. She lives in Eagle Mountain, Utah.

An illustrator all of her life, Debbi Cary lives in Boise, Idaho.
