Nokia chosen by the Royal Library of Denmark to control data traffic flow and protect its network

September 26, 2003 -The Royal Library of Denmark in Copenhagen, the country's national library merged with the University of Copenhagen, has chosen to secure its main network and virtual private network (VPN) using Nokia IP network security appliances integrating the market-leading VPN-1®/FireWall-1® software from its global partner Check Point Software Technologies (NASDAQ: CHKP).  The solution was designed to easily integrate with the Royal Library's existing IT infrastructure and is helping the organization deliver wider secure access to both staff and the public.

The Royal Library is using powerful Nokia IP400 and IP500 Series network appliances to provide secure and reliable connectivity and data security. In addition, Nokia IP100 entry-level appliances have been chosen for a smaller satellite site.

As with other public sector institutions in Denmark, the library has refocused on network security given the wider use of electronic-based operations. These operations include Internet use to manage book loans, stock management and other operational demands such as the legal protection of personal data.

Based across three main sites and one smaller satellite operation, the Royal Library's IT infrastructure consists of 800 PCs, 120 printers and 60 servers. The Nokia solutions protect a 34Mbps (megabits per second) network interconnection point between the national library and the university library, and a 1,000Mbps network fiber backbone that provides up to 100Mbps to workstations and servers.  As this network spans four sites the use of firewall and VPN technology to protect communications is of paramount importance.

"The users are both administrative users as well as public users either from the university or beyond.  The main requirement was to guard against security attacks, block unwanted traffic on the network, and to also support greater network performance both within the organization and outside, including 384kbps (kilobits per second) broadband sign-on from users' homes," says Martin Schou Larsen, section manager, IT department at the Royal Library.

"Our priority was to identify a solution that offered flexibility and stability, and Nokia's IP network security appliances offered just that. The Nokia solution was easy to deploy and integrate into our existing network infrastructure.  Our experience confirmed the Nokia product reviews we read in publications, which, along with our network reseller, Ementor, persuaded us to choose Nokia," Larsen adds.

Nokia clustering technology prevents dropped packets of data and protects basic connections through an automatic fail-over system, ensuring continuity of service in a mission critical environment.  The Nokia IP network appliances also cater to future requirements where the Royal Library may consider the introduction of IP-based desk phones that can be integrated with cell-phone technology along with wireless LAN installations.

"Nokia is committed to assisting the public sector with best-of-breed security solutions.  The data throughput at the Royal Library is very high, with the number of users rapidly increasing.  We are proud to be protecting such an important national institution and asset," says Ernie Jones, vice president of sales, Europe, Middle-East & Africa, Nokia.

About the Royal Library
The Royal Library of Denmark was founded by King Frederik III in around 1648.  From the 17th Century, copies of all publications printed in Denmark have been deposited at the Copenhagen-based institution.  In 1989, the Royal Library was merged with the University of Copenhagen Library to create a larger, single operation consisting of four sites under the auspices of the Danish Government's Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
