Around the World in Five Years -- Author's memoir offers incredible story of travel and personal growth

NEW YORK, Oct. 6, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- It was an insatiable wanderlust that drove author Fabiola Pon to leave behind a land of apartheid in South Africa and set out on a journey around the globe to learn and discover the ways of the world and find personal fulfillment. Along the way, she kept a journal, recording her experiences and thoughts in vivid detail seen through young eyes. Upon reading the journal years later, Pon realized the impact of her incredible story, which eventually became her newly released book, Locked Passion of a Free Spirit (now available through 1stBooks).

Pon's book presents a touching, true story of soul-searching, loneliness and friendship in an adventure of a lifetime. A Chinese South African, Pon began life as a shy, unsure young woman. Oppressed by the apartheid society in which she grew up, she became restless to see and experience the wonders of the rest of the world. Her travels took her hitch-hiking across Europe, sailing the high seas, exploring the United States, braving South America and working wherever she could, the author writes.

Living this vagrant life for five years, Pon spends her young adulthood drifting from beach to beach and bar to bar in search of the ever-elusive love and affection she longs for. In her search, she finds that her attraction to older, domineering men often leads to abuse within her relationships. Though loneliness and sadness are constant companions, another more volatile, yet loving friendship also emerges with a passionate and unpredictable Spanish South African girl.

A story of love, sex, abuse and adventure, Locked Passion of a Free Spirit follows Pon from her days as a naive girl, longing for freedom and craving the unknown, to her future as a courageous and cultured woman, finally free from the chains of her "ethnic inhibitions."

Born in South Africa, Pon was surrounded by ethnic and racial segregation as she grew up. At the age of 23, she left home and set off on her five-year journey. She now resides in New York City.
