Nokia launches standards-based WCDMA, EDGE and CDMA2000 state-of-the-art modules for base stations

ATLANTA- Nokia Technology Platforms today announced a new family of base station modules designed for WCDMA, EDGE and CDMA2000 base stations. With the launch, Nokia reinforces its new business model where modules are sold to external base station vendors. The Nokia FlexiTransport base station family of modules is now available and provides base station vendors with increased flexibility and greater upgrade possibilities in a more cost-efficient manner.

The Nokia FlexiTransport family of modules, developed and marketed by Network Technology Modules of Nokia, is designed to meet the requirements of a very demanding business environment where solutions for base station vendors need to be flexible, easily scaleable and competitively priced. Base station vendors can now benefit from Nokia's extensive experience in base station development by obtaining modules that are specifically designed for base station applications.

Integrating these Nokia FlexiTransport modules into base stations is simplified with the help of open interfaces complying with open specifications in the industry such as ITU-T, ATM Forum, IETF and OBSAI.

"Base station vendors operate in challenging times and therefore demand products which are competitive, flexible and based on open specifications. Our mission is to develop the best technologies for cost-efficient, superior technology modules for our base station vendor customers," commented Vesa Tykkylainen, Vice President, Network Technology Modules.

"As our Nokia FlexiTransport modules are built on open interfaces our base station vendor customers can easily utilize them alongside their own R&D, thus enabling an enhanced feature-set, speeding time to market and extending the lifecycle of their base station solutions," he further added.

As a complete transport solution for WCDMA, EDGE and CDMA2000 base stations the Nokia FlexiTransport operates as an embedded transport node, thereby connecting the base station to the access network.  Within a common set of modules Nokia FlexiTransport supports both emerging IP networks as well as existing ATM networks. For example, upgrades from ATM mode to IP mode can be executed remotely --a necessity when base stations have been deployed in large volumes across wide areas.  Furthermore, Nokia FlexiTransport modules also support a variety of transport as well as different base station configurations. These functionalities allow all base stations within the mobile network to be equipped with a common transport solution.

Network Technology Modules (NTM), within Nokia Technology Platforms, is a technology house driving open network element architectures and developing cost efficient, superior technology modules for base station vendors.
