The Heroines of World War II -- New Book Celebrates the Women of World War II

ADDISON, Texas, July 12, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- You have heard his World War II story-his struggles, his sacrifices, his triumphs. But what about her story? In the poignant new book, They Also Served, Jeanie Sutton Lambright reveals the true-to-life stories of the women who came to their majorities during the late 1930's and early 1940's.

The book is an uplifting, and at times heartbreaking, collection of memories bringing to life the experiences of women during World War II. Laughter, shock, joy, tears and outrage are shared in recollections of women from all walks of life. None of those profiled achieved great renown-these were the neighbors next door, the townspeople encountered at the post office or market, the ladies sharing the pews at worship services. With brave determination they entered the workforce, they enlisted for duty, they kept the home fires burning. Unwilling to be mere bystanders to the war effort, they did their parts in every way imaginable-and some not so easily imagined.

Some of the recollections are riveting with action; others are slices of life. The author serves the reader fifty-three stories that capture the essence of the World War II years-each to be enjoyed with a cup of hot coffee, and a feeling that one is sitting across a kitchen table, listening to the ladies tell their own tales. They Also Served reveals how life really was, and successfully illustrates the heroine in every woman who braved the effects of world war on her home and her country.
