Nokia awarded order to further expand Chunghwa Telecom's 3G Network in Taiwan

Nokia continues as Chunghwa Telecom's sole supplier for 3G

Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd, the largest telecom operator in Taiwan, has issued Nokia the order to build out the second phase of its WCDMA based 3G network. With this expansion Nokia continues to be Chunghwa Telecom's sole 3G infrastructure supplier.

Roll-out for this new expansion has already begun and will expand Chunghwa Telecom's 3G network coverage to the most populated areas in west coast and major cities of east coast of the island.

This decision by Chunghwa Telecom followed the successful completion of the first phase of its 3G network build-out, using equipment solely supplied by Nokia, including the 3GPP Rel.4 architecture. The Nokia WCDMA 3G solution will enable Chunghwa Telecom's eight million customers to enjoy advanced multimedia mobile services, such as multimedia messaging, mobile entertainment, mobile location services, corporate services, and m-commerce.

"Chunghwa decides to continue working with Nokia because of its expertise in WCDMA technology. Following the successful roll-out of the first phase of our 3G network with Nokia as the only supplier, we are very pleased to extend this partnership into the second phase. The decision also demonstrates our satisfaction with Nokia's performance and mature technologies and services", says Mr. Chang, Shaio-Tung, President of Mobile Business Group, Chunghwa Telecom.

"It is a privilege to continue working with Chunghwa as the sole supplier in its 3G network roll-out. We regard this order as Chunghwa's recognition of the commitment and expertise Nokia demonstrated in building the first phase of Chunghwa's 3G network," says Mr. Simon Beresford-Wylie, Senior Vice President, Networks, APAC, Nokia.

"We also see this as Chunghwa's appreciation of the value Nokia is bringing to this partnership. The fact that Chunghwa is continuing into second phase roll-out further testifies to the maturity of the WCDMA technology", he adds.

Nokia has been working with Chunghwa Telecom since 1999, having supplied the operator's GPRS core network, multimedia messaging solution (MMS) and ADSL for high-speed fixed Internet access in addition to the WCDMA system.

Under the expansion agreement Nokia is supplying an extensive scope of work covering WCDMA equipment and services. The equipments include Radio Network Controllers, WCDMA Indoor Supreme Base Stations, Outdoor Supreme Base Stations and MetroSite Base Stations for both macro and indoor sites, circuit core expansion.

In addition Nokia will continue to supply a complete range of operator services to help Chunghwa maximize their operating efficiency and add value to their business case. These services include network planning, site acquisition, project management, installation, commissioning, pre-launch optimization and multivendor network integration for fast ramp-up and seamless overlay of new technologies.

Furthermore, a wide range of care services, including a dedicated local team and expert online support around the clock, spare parts management, hardware repair, extensive operations support services, training and continuous network optimization will help Chunghwa launch efficient 3G operations and realize the full potential of their investment.
