Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR reached the highest F=1 rating

Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR has taken another significant step forward. The child resistant, senior friendly and high-compliance package has successfully completed testing in the United States and reached the highest rating F=1. The package also complies with the European standard ISO 8317.

The package was tested in the US under the standard and protocol according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, CFR Title 16, Part 1700.20. "Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR offers an efficient and competitive CR packaging solution to pharmaceutical brand owners, contract packers and clinical testing providers. The F=1 rating is a pivotal starting point for the pharmaceutical community, when considering child resistant compliance packaging for lethal dosage products not yet introduced into the market or existing products which have undergone reformulation of active ingredients listed," says Ismo Saarinen, Director of Pharmaceutical Solutions at Stora Enso Consumer Boards.

Stora Enso and Bosch launched the concept in June 2004 and have received significant number of enquiries for the concept after the launch. The concept consists of special tear resistant paperboard, unique carton design and automated packaging machine. Recently, the package was awarded prizes in the German Packaging Competition and the Swedish pharmaceutical packaging competition of Apoteket. Both ISO8317 and F=1 now fully completed, Stora Enso expects the first packaging line to be operational during the second quarter of 2005.

Suitable for versatile unit-dose packaging

Type and design of package have an impact on patient compliance and safety. Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR is ideal for unit-dose packages such as blister cards, which are considered safe and high-compliance packages compared with bottles and jars. "The blister market is expected to continue to grow both in the United States and Europe. Typical blister packaging applications in the US include prescription medication, institutional medicine distribution, sample packs, clinical trials and over-the-counter medicines," Saarinen says.

Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR carton is reclosable, which means that no additional child resistance features are required for the blister. The ingenious 'both hands' opening system of the carton makes it easy for adults but keeps the contents from the small hands of children. Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR overcomes the limits of conventional peel-off and push-through blisters, which can be difficult for the patients because opening them requires good finger mobility and eye vision.

In addition to blisters, Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR can be used for ampoules, vials and syringes. Thanks to its suitability for versatile unit-dose packaging and applicability for creative patient-guidance schemes, Stora Enso PharmaPak SHR provides optimal compliance performance.
