Microsemi Sees Growing Demand for Its Light Sensing Technology

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 3, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), announced today that its patent-pending visible light sensor technology is finding an increasing number of design-ins among mid to high-end notebook computer platforms where its spectral sensitivity approximating the human eye sensitivity provides the highest accuracy for automatic brightness control.

"Other silicon light sensing solutions are inherently inaccurate," explains Paul Bibeau, Vice President and General Manager of Microsemi's Integrated Products Group, "because they actually are more sensitive to infra red heat than to the visible light spectrum. Adding optical filters and compensation circuitry can improve their performance, but at the expense of a much more complicated system that still cannot match our performance providing optimal brightness that appeals to the human eye," he said.

The Microsemi light sensor solution provides system engineers with a way to design LCD displays that can adjust their brightness automatically in response to changing ambient light.

The benefits include more than eye comfort since automatic brightness control adds substantial power management capabilities that can extend battery life, particularly in environments such as an aircraft cabin where the most comfortable viewing can be at a power-saving dim level.

Microsemi reports that its light sensor design activity extends beyond notebook computers to include a variety of handheld PDA type products, plus vehicular applications where an additional benefit is achieved by eliminating the cadmium-based devices being phased out by environmental "green" mandates.

The Microsemi line of visible light sensors includes the original general purpose LX1970(tm) linear output device, the LX1971(tm) square root output device for the most critical light sensitivity, and the miniature two-lead LX1972(tm) linear output device.
