Abu Dhabi Police choose Nokia TETRA for advanced radio communications

Ministry of Interior, UAE has awarded Nokia the project to implement for Abu Dhabi Police their advanced digital radio communication network, Policom

Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates has signed an agreement with Nokia to implement an advanced radio communications system for Abu Dhabi Police. The implementation of the turnkey project is part of the Ministry of Interior's five-year plan for upgrading the police work in the UAE.

The new communications network, Policom, will be based on TETRA technology, an open digital trunked radio standard, designed to meet the needs of the most demanding professional users. It will cover the whole of the Abu Dhabi Emirate.

Nokia will be the main contractor of the project and provide the complete solution, including the core Nokia TETRA network, more than a hundred Nokia TB3 TETRA base stations, a large number of dispatcher stations, a centralised network management solution Nokia NetActTM for TETRA, and a comprehensive set of services. The contract also covers a significant number of Nokia handportable and mobile radio terminals.

"The very backbone of police work is the ability to communicate - instantly, reliably, and securely," states Lt. General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior. "The selection of a qualified company to carry out such a project was a challenge itself. Choosing Nokia to implement the Policom network was the result of lengthy technical investigations and field tours conducted by our police communications experts. We also conducted a prolonged technical study on Nokia's sophisticated TETRA system".

"The selection process was very thorough, and we are proud to have been selected," says Hans Holmberg, Vice President, TETRA Sales and Marketing, Nokia. "Ministry of Interior, UAE is a knowledgeable customer with their sights in the future, and we are looking forward to working with them in building a system that suits their very specific needs. This is a very important case for Nokia, strengthening our position in the global public safety markets".

Notes to Editors:
TETRA technology is a world standard published by ETSI for digital mobile trunking networks. TETRA networks offer secure, digital mobile communication for professional organizations such as oil and gas companies, utilities, transportation and public safety and security sector (police, emergency, civil defence, security services, etc.).  Data communication improves field operations by allowing users to access databases via their radios.

Most European countries have already chosen the open TETRA standard as the basis for their public authority radio networks, as have a number of countries elsewhere in the world.

TETRA technology minimizes the capital investments and the operational expenses of organizations because it allows simultaneous and independent use of a single existing network by many services, administrations and ministries. TETRA enhances the safety of classified information by using encryption of the connection. It also increases the effectiveness and the coordination of different services and ministries in crises and natural disaster situations through connecting independent Virtual Private Networks into one communication environment.

Already today, TETRA provides voice and data services efficiently because it has data capabilities integrated into its infrastructure and is supported by standard TETRA terminals. This is an economical alternative to providing dedicated radio resources for data.
