Flying Fish Brewing Company, World's First `Virtual Microbrewery,' Celebrates 10 Years on the Web

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Nov. 21, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Started 10 years ago with an idea, a laptop and a web address, Flying Fish Brewing Company has grown from a "virtual brewery" to the largest craft brewery in New Jersey.

To celebrate this special anniversary, Flying Fish put together a timeline on its Web site so beer lovers can step back a decade to see how far the brewery has come. The actual time line can be viewed on-line at http://www.flyingfish.com/fishtales/ten_years.cfm.

The idea for the original site, says founder Gene Muller, was to combine "This Old House" with the World Wide Web. The original Web site generated consumer interest and helped attract the investors needed to make the virtual brewery a real one. Beer lovers were given a behind-the-scenes look, as well as a say, in the creation of the brewery. Visitors could help select and name beers, and even apply for a job as a brewer. Ten years later, FlyingFishMail, the site's monthly e-mail newsletter, boasts more than 12,000 subscribers.

One year after the website launched, Flying Fish moved into its current location in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Flying Fish beers can now be found in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C. They have also been featured in festivals throughout the United States, as well as Canada and England.
