Cargotec to Automate Container Port in Hamburg

Kalmar, the business area providing container handling solutions within Cargotec, has been chosen to supply the automatic stacking crane system (ASCs) and related technology for the Port of Hamburg's biggest terminal operator, HHLA.

HHLA will automate the container yard of its Burchardkai terminal by year 2015. In the first phase of the investment project Kalmar will deliver 15 ASCs and their control and automation systems during 2007-2008.

The contract includes an option to deliver an additional 75 ASCs in the next phases of the project. The parties have agreed not to disclose the contract value.

"We are very proud that HHLA chooses to work with us in this project, which is leading the way for the whole container handling industry. Automated solutions are increasing in importance as terminals look for ways to improve handling capacity and productivity in a safe and environmentally friendly way", states Christer Granskog President of Kalmar.

HHLA's Burchardkai terminal in the Port of Hamburg handled approximately TEU 2.7 million in 2005 (TEU is a 20 ft container). The target of the terminal automation is to raise the capacity to TEU 5.2 million by the year 2015.
