BETHPAGE, N.Y., Feb. 21, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) is offering five $10,000 scholarships to Long Island high-school seniors who plan to major in aerospace-related engineering, applied mathematics or computer science in college.
The Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholarship was designed to help encourage Long Island students to pursue these courses of study. Each scholarship will be worth $2,500 per year per student over four years. The Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholarship is a competitive program, open to high-school seniors attending public or accredited private schools in New York's Nassau and Suffolk counties.
"Science and technology will drive the economy of the future and America's ability to compete in the world market," said Duke Dufresne, sector vice president of Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare Systems for Northrop Grumman's Integrated Systems sector. "While we're hearing reports that America's youth are losing interest in technology, we know that Long Island students are among the best our nation has to offer. We established this scholarship program to help maintain and enhance that fine reputation."
In addition to the monetary award, scholarship winners will be eligible for summer internships at Northrop Grumman following their freshman, sophomore and junior years.
Applicants must be chosen by their schools and the applications must be submitted by a school's guidance office or related department, not by the students themselves.
To be eligible, students must plan to attend accredited colleges or universities as full-time students in approved engineering programs, including: aerospace, electrical, mechanical or computer engineering, applied mathematics or computer science. Each applicant must be in the top 10 percent of the class and have an SAT score of at least 1,900 (700 Math, 600 Critical Reading, 600 Writing) or ACT score of 28 (with Math and Science scores of 30 or better).
The application deadline is March 3. Applications will be evaluated by a Northrop Grumman committee and the winners announced at the end of April. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and remain in an approved program to maintain their scholarship eligibility.
