PHILADELPHIA, June 30, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- PGA Champions Tour professional Walter Morgan will be honored as the 2006 African-American Legend of Golf during the 9th Annual James Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Classic (JHMSFGC), which runs from Saturday, July 8 to Monday, July 10, 2006. The golf classic, which is hosted by Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes, was established in honor of his late father, James Hughes, to raise funds for scholarships for Philadelphia public school graduates who attend one of the 14 state system universities. More than $1 million has been raised over the years to support the educational endeavors of nearly 250 students.
The JHMSFGC has evolved into a signature regional event. In addition to being recognized for its longstanding commitment to providing educational resources for local students, it has been lauded as the only golf classic in the country to honor the rich legacy of involvement of African-American golfers in the sport.
This year's honoree, Walter Morgan, has three Champions Tour victories: 1995 -- GTE Northwest Classic; 1996 -- FHP Health Care Classic; and the 1996 -- Ameritech Senior Open. He also has one Georgia-Pacific Grand Champions Victory, the 2002 Uniting Fore Care Classic. His best Champions Tour finish was T60 at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in 2004.
The 9th Annual JHMSF Golf Classic kicks off with a Pairings Party on Saturday, July 8, from 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. at Lloyd Hall, No. 1 Boathouse Row, Kelly & Waterworks Dr., in Philadelphia, PA. The golf outing takes places on Monday, July 10, at the DuPont Country Club, Rockland Road, in Rockland, Delaware with an 11:00 a.m. shotgun start.
