Tuesday: November 28, 2006, 11 a.m. to 12 noon, EST It has been estimated that 75 percent of all healthcare costs are directly related to preventable chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Preventable conditions resulting from alcohol misuse, tobacco use, and complications during pregnancy are also leading causes of disability and lost productivity. Employers and other purchasers of healthcare can reduce, or in some cases, avoid healthcare costs associated with these preventable conditions by offering coverage for and promoting the use of clinical preventive services. On November 28th, The National Business Group on Health, along with representatives from the CDC and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, will hold a press "teleconference" to announce the launch of a Purchaser's Guide on preventive clinical services for employers and other health care purchasers. This Purchaser's Guide is part of a big push to encourage employers to change the focus of benefits from acute care to prevention. The teleconference will begin at 11 a.m. and will include comments from Helen Darling, president of the Business Group, and executives from the CDC and AHRQ. After the program, the speakers will take questions. Speakers: HELEN DARLING, President, National Business Group on Health CAROLYN M. CLANCY, M.D., Director, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality JULIE GERBERDING, M.D., Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
