TASER Device Used to Prevent Suicide, End Standoff

WASHINGTON, Nov. 29, 2006 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices released the following News Alert:

According to news reports from the Reno Gazette Journal, a suspected parole violator with a violent history was arrest Tuesday night after holding two people hostage and threatening suicide. State patrol officers arrived at the 1852 Merchant St. apartment just before 4:00 p.m. Tuesday with a warrant to search the home and arrest Ted Henderson. It was then that the arrest became violent and backup was called in to assist.

Officers evacuated six nearby apartments and hostage negotiators worked to coax Henderson out of the apartment. Henderson released the two hostages just before SWAT team officials fired tear gas pellets into the apartment. After 30 minutes, Henderson emerged from the apartment around 10:00 p.m. holding a knife to his throat and a suicide note. Special Weapons and Tactics Officers responded by deploying a TASER device, forcing Henderson to drop the knife and allowing police to take him into custody.

Henderson was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center to be treated for a self-inflicted cut on his throat. Lt. Chad Hawkins said Henderson will be booked into county jail on suspicion of parole violation and resisting officers with a deadly weapon.
