ATLANTA, May 22, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- MedAvant Healthcare Solutions (MedAvant) (Nasdaq:PILL), a leader in healthcare technology and transaction services, today announced that it will receive a "Laureate" award for its data storage management system from the Computerworld Honors Program. Established in 1988, the program recognizes companies which use information technology to benefit society. Among last year's Laureate winners were BellSouth Corporation, Duke University Health System, and the National Cancer Institute.
"We're honored to receive this award in recognition of the value we bring to the healthcare community," said John Lettko, MedAvant President and Chief Executive Officer. "We process more than a million healthcare transactions a day to streamline payment processing throughout healthcare. Uninterrupted service is critical to the doctors, hospitals, clinics, medical laboratories, and insurance payers we serve."
The award is based on MedAvant's partnership last year with Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., to create a data management infrastructure. Using two facilities, one in Atlanta and one in Richardson, Texas, MedAvant is able to continue operations even if a disaster strikes either site.
In addition to disaster recovery, the new storage environment has helped MedAvant optimize and automate its information technology infrastructure. MedAvant processes transactions on its real-time Phoenix(sm) processing platform, and the mirrored infrastructure will help MedAvant capitalize on demands for business intelligence from that information.
"Hitachi healthcare customers like MedAvant rely on Hitachi's proven storage platforms to store and protect sensitive patient data," said Brenda Peffer, vice president, Global Marketing at Hitachi Data Systems. "Hitachi has a long history of working with customers to provide breakthrough solutions that not only add value to an organization's business, but deliver significant value to society as a whole."
The Computerworld Honors Program is governed by the Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation. The awards will be presented June 4 in Washington, DC. A case study with a detailed description of the project will become part of the program's Global Archives.
