Fourth of July Travel Expected to Stay Flat, Says AAA Texas

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - June 29, 2007) - The number of Texans taking a Fourth of July trip will remain almost the same as last year, increasing by just one-half of 1 percent compared to 2006, according to AAA Texas. More than 3.4 million statewide are expected to take trips this holiday.

Of those traveling, more than 86 percent, or 2.9 million, will drive to their destinations -- an increase of less than 1 percent over last year. Another 329,000 Texans are expected to take plane trips over the holiday, also an increase of less than 1 percent compared to last year.

"Because the Fourth of July is on Wednesday, many households are taking a longer trip of at least five days," said AAA Texas spokesperson Paul Flaningan. "In fact, 39 percent of Texans traveling to Fourth of July getaways are leaving today or have already left, while another 21 percent will leave on Saturday and 11 percent will leave Monday."

More than two-thirds of Texas households with children are expected to bring them along on their July Fourth travels.

The top destinations for Texans over this holiday, according to a survey of AAA Travel, are:

1) San Antonio
2) Orlando
3) New York City
4) Galveston (beaches and cruises)
5) Las Vegas
About 41.1 million Americans are expected to take Fourth of July trips, an increase of less than 1 percent compared to last year. National and state travel projections are based on a survey of 1,300 adults conducted by the Travel Industry Association of America for AAA.

Local gas prices are mixed compared to last year, with most regions under $3 a gallon but still higher than they were at this time in 2006.
