National Data Repository Work Group Formed
| Source: Energistics
HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - February 3, 2009) - Global regulators of upstream oil and natural
gas information, including seismic, drilling, production and reservoir
data, announced today the formation of the National Data Repository (NDR)
Work Group which will collaborate on the development of data management and
exchange standards. Additionally, it will assist emerging nations with
hydrocarbon reserves to improve upon the collection, maintenance and
delivery of quality oil and gas data to the industry.
"After a decade of successful meetings around the world, we decided it was
time to formalize this effort under one banner and to make sure we
communicated our data management standards message to all nations with
hydrocarbon reserves," said Martin R. H. E. Peersmann, Director of the
National Joint Venture Topographic Base-map of the Netherlands (LSV GBKN)
and Chairman of the NDR Work Group. Peersmann added, "We are excited about
the obtained level of maturity of our NDR organisation and the opportunity
this creates to bring additional countries into our community to work with
the upstream energy industry to build robust and quality databases for oil
and natural gas."
Ten countries, led by the United Kingdom, Norway and the Netherlands,
formed NDR to share best practices and to formalize the development and
deployment of data management standards for regulatory agencies. The other
countries involved in the NDR Work Group's formation are Australia, Canada,
India, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States. They have
been joined by oilfield service and consulting companies Schlumberger,
Halliburton, RPS/Paras and Pennwell to ensure that data quality and
regulatory standards deployment meets the needs of all users. The NDR Work
Group is part of the eRegulatory Special Interest Group of the upstream
industry open standards consortium, Energistics.
Eric Toogood of the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate and Manager of Diskos,
The Norwegian National Data Repository, added, "Government has a critical
role in the management of data associated with the regulation of oilfield
activities and a legal responsibility to provide quality data to the
industry in a very structured manner. Without open standards being used by
the regulatory agencies in a global fashion, industry is required to meet
too many data type requests from many different countries and ultimately
the data quality suffers. Regulatory bodies must be proactive in the
implementation and uptake of standards in collaboration with the industry.
The NDR Work Group and NDR meetings can greatly facilitate this process."
The most recent NDR meetings were held in Cartagena, Columbia in 2006 and
Cape Town, South Africa in 2008. The next NDR meeting will be hosted by
India's Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) from 31 August to 3
September of 2009 at the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. NDR meetings are open
to all government and regulatory agencies as well as other industry
organizations and focus on sharing lessons learned, data management
techniques and exploring software available to manage data repositories.
Stewart Robinson, Director of IT and Data Services of the UK's Department
of Energy and Climate Control, remarked, "Participating in NDR is all about
working together, both government and industry, on a common set of
requirements in support of shared goals such as developing regulatory IT
administrative systems, linking NDR processes with administrative processes
and releasing high quality data to the upstream energy industry."
About NDR
The National Data Repository Work Group is a global organization formed to
assist government and regulatory agencies in the collection, storage and
dissemination of quality oil and natural gas related data. Participation
in the NDR Work Group is open to any government, regulatory or industry
organization interested in data management issues associated with the data
exchange interfaces between industry and the agencies. More information
