WHITE PLAINS, NY--(Marketwire - March 4, 2009) - World Math Day 2009, a free web-event
where students answer mental arithmetic problems in an inclusive,
multi-player environment (
www.worldmathday.com), officially starts today
allowing students from around the world to be a part of the world's largest
annual educational event. There are more than 1,500,000 children registered
to play from 226 countries. The event began in New Zealand at 12:00 a.m. on
March 4, 2009 and ends in Samoa on March 5 at 12:00 a.m. Since the Web site
opened for practice sessions on February 1, 2009, students have correctly
answered 494,358,475 practice math questions.
Children 5-18 years old compete in real time against other children from
around the world using the World Math Day Web site. Each math game lasts 60
seconds and children can play as many games as they wish. The event aims to
encourage children of all ages and abilities to be excited by math, as well
as have the chance to set a world record for the number of games played in
an allotted timeframe. Participation in World Math Day is free, and
everyone, including school classes, is encouraged to take part. All that is
required is a computer and an Internet connection. Results from practice
sessions since the start of February show:
-- An average improvement of 30% in mental math speed and accuracy for
children involved.
-- 96 was the most questions answered in 60 seconds.
"World Math Day is set to be bigger and better than ever before in 2009,"
said Peter Walters of 3P Learning, the key presenting partner in the United
States. "We're expecting to surpass the world record set in 2008 when more
than one million children from 164 countries participated, correctly
answering 182,455,169 questions."
For the second year running, Cartoon Network, the leading kid's television
channel, will be lending its support in promoting the event and encouraging
kids to take part through the popular Ben 10 cartoon series. Prizes ranging
from gold medals to printed certificates are awarded to participants
according to age group.
