Cooperation with HiQ boosts Kuusakoski's Recycling Business

Recycling represents a specific subset of material flows and therefore poses a
huge logistical challenge. Kuusakoski collects recyclable materials in 11
countries and sells products made of these worldwide. Kuusakoski has answered
the logistical challenge by implementing a self-developed enterprise resource
planning system whose further development is carried out by HiQ.

“Our joint challenge is to improve the system architecture so that it will be
able to meet the needs of the growing and developing business even more
flexibly. The monolithic system is subdivided into modules that can be further
developed as independent units. Simultaneously, usability is improved and
technology-related risks are minimized, explains Ari Hakaste, project manager at
HiQ.

Monitoring material flows and inventory balance in as close to real time as
possible is of primary importance, because the data generated by the drop-off
centres is constantly being stored and utilized for different purposes.
Moreover, compatibility with the different applications provided by the
cooperation partners and flexible integration of new functionalities into the
system are important development issues.

“Information technology plays a surprisingly significant role in the business of
Kuusakoski. It renders it possible to combine several different factors and
convert them into a successful business”, Ari Hakaste says.

Through its cooperation with HiQ, Kuusakoski has been able to upgrade the level
of its logistics activities. Among other things, new opportunities that have
emerged in conjunction with changes in legislation can be utilized effectively
now that the processes are well-structured.

“Through its cooperation with HiQ, the logistics activities of Kuusakoski have
reached a new level of efficiency. With HiQ we have the opportunity to develop
this unique system flexibly according to our ever-changing needs - a tailor-made
suit offers an excellent fit”, says Kari Kuosmanen, the Information Technology
Manager of Kuusakoski.
