Dialog has worked closely with Samsung to optimise the operation of the keypad display to ensure it does not consume any power when images are static - saving energy and extending the battery life of the phone. The transparent keypad based on e-ink electronic paper display technology, automatically adapts to portrait or landscape mode, depending on the function required; key legends are displayed in portrait mode for phone dialing, and in landscape mode for sending emails, text or web browsing. 'This is our first design win at Samsung - a top tier mobile phone supplier and represents an important success for Dialog to be adding Samsung as a new customer', said Dr Jalal Bagherli, CEO of Dialog Semiconductor. 'Smartphones are the current growth sector for the cellular market and has been a focus for Dialog.' The DA8531 offers the best combination of display quality, energy efficiency, size and cost, reducing the phones bill-of-materials and required board space. It comes in a 5 x 5 x 1mm BGA package, requiring only two external capacitors. The device has 64 display driver outputs and communicates via a SPI serial interface. +++ends Note to editors: Dialog Semiconductor creates energy-efficient, integrated, mixed-signal circuits optimised for personal mobile, lighting & display and automotive applications.
