Anaren Offers New Application Note Addressing Balun Use With High-Speed Data Converter From Analog Devices

Application Note Addresses Use of Anaren Balun in Conjunction With Analog Devices' AD9640 Dual 14-bit, High-Speed Analog-to-Digital Converter; Pairing Improves High-Frequency Amplitude Balance, Delivers Better Gain Flatness, and Reduces the Footprint When Compared to Traditional Wire-Wound Baluns

SYRACUSE, N.Y., Dec. 2, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Anaren, Inc. (Nasdaq:ANEN), an innovator and leading provider of microwave and RF technology, announced it has introduced an application note and layout package to facilitate the use of its halogen-free surface-mount balun in conjunction with Analog Devices' high-performance AD9640 dual 14-bit, 150 MSPS, unbuffered analog-to-digital (ADC) data converter. Pairing the Anaren balun (part number BD0205F5050AHF) with the Analog Devices converter improves high-frequency amplitude balance, improves gain flatness, and saves significant PCB space over traditional wire-wound baluns.

Analog Devices' AD9640 high-speed ADC operates at up to 150 MSPS and is effective for a broad range of communications applications, such as diversity radio systems, multimode digital receivers, and smart antenna systems. In such applications, and particularly in high-frequency applications where traditional baluns may not be employed, Anaren's balun assists with amplitude balance and gain flatness. In addition, the balun helps customers achieve:

> significant space savings (80 to 90% smaller footprint) over wire-wound implementations;

> improved and highly repeatable performance (when compared to traditional wire-wound equivalents), attributable to Anaren's unique, multilayer organic substrate construction;

> a reduced overall component count, since a single, surface-mountable Anaren balun replaces multiple wire-wound parts

"Analog Devices is an industry leader in high-performance ADCs," said Mark Bowyer, a business development manager for Anaren's Wireless Group. "As with other instances where our balun solution is a solid fit for Analog Devices' data converters, we're excited about bringing the advantages of a true SMT non-ferrite component to bear. It's just one in a long line of instances where Anaren continues to seize opportunities for improvement left by traditional wire-wound solutions."

Key specifications for Anaren's balun are as follows:
