KANSAS CITY, Kan., Jan. 3, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In conjunction with President Obama's historic signing of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act into law which sets a national nutritional standard in schools, Fresh Healthy Vending has selected new Franchisee Mark Brenner to provide healthy vending to the Prairie Village, Kansas area.
"I wanted to be on the cutting edge of something in a stable industry. Fresh Healthy Vending was the best choice I found that could catapult me into the health food revolution, which is gaining momentum across the country," said Mark Brenner, the new Fresh Franchisee. "Eating healthier and feeling better from it will enable many more kids to focus on learning and therefore a better chance at becoming healthier happier adults. Generally, kids have not been offered the choice to eat healthy in school before and we now can provide that choice," added Brenner.
President Barack Obama signed a sweeping overhaul of child nutrition standards enacting a law meant to encourage better eating habits in part by giving the federal government more authority to set standards for food sold in school vending machines and elsewhere on school grounds.
"Today is a great day for kids throughout our country as they will soon have healthier and more nutritious food in their schools. As we continue to focus on the twin issues of childhood obesity and hunger, we will increase access to good, quality meals in school cafeterias so the nutritional needs of our youngsters are better met. The President and First Lady have advocated strongly for passing the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, and, this bill, along with the resources and the powers provided under it, are going to allow USDA to be much more effective and aggressive in responding to obesity and hunger challenges for America's kids," said U.S. Secretary Of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.
Prior to the passage of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, Kansas had not set nutritional standards for school lunches, breakfasts, and snacks that were stricter than current United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements. Twenty states and D.C. had to date already set stricter standards. The new law sets nutritional standards for all food offered in schools including food served in cafeterias, vending machines and stores.
In response to the demand for Healthy Hunger-Free compliance, Fresh Healthy Vending's in-house location team has secured and installed Fresh Healthy Vending machines into Kansas schools both public and private including: Westridge Middle School, Indian Woods Middle School, Center High School and Hogan Prep Academy.
"Fresh Healthy Vending programs offer a strong solution for schools to clean up their vending programs and offer fresh healthy options. Our programs are a perfect fit and growing quickly in school districts and locations around the U.S.," said Jolly Backer, CEO of Fresh Healthy Vending.
