Tacoma Neighborhood Crime Prevention Program to Host Identity Theft Education Seminar

TEMPE, Ariz., April 6, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Tacoma Neighborhood Crime Prevention Program will host a free educational program on the dangers of identity theft on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. The event will highlight the particular identity theft threats facing residents of Tacoma and will provide a series of solutions available to consumers to reduce their risk of becoming a victim. The event is open to the public and will be held at the Tacoma Police Department, 3701 South Pine Street.

Will Marling, the Executive Director of the National Organization for Victim's Assistance (NOVA), will deliver the 60-minute presentation that includes the proactive steps for consumers to follow to help avoid falling victim to identity theft as well as reactive measures to take if you become a victim of identity theft.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released their annual Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book in March 2011 which shows the number of consumer complaints filed to the government agency the prior year (2010). In 2010, identity theft was the No. 1 complaint filed with the agency for the 11th consecutive year. More than 2,600 complaints of identity theft were filed from residents in the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area.

LifeLock, an industry leader in identity theft protection, has aligned with NOVA, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI LEEDA) and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) to help deliver free educational presentations to consumers and law enforcement agencies across the country.
