ALBANY, N.Y., July 26, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- StratoComm Corporation (Pink Sheets:STCO) and Cortland Company today announce execution of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement that capitalizes on StratoComm's U.S. Patent # 7,708,222 issued in May of 2010.
"In selecting Cortland as its preferred collaborator for this critically important effort, StratoComm evaluated the capabilities and reliability of every meaningful tether manufacturer worldwide. Our selection process revealed Cortland to be the preeminent tether designer and manufacturer and the clear choice to support this effort," said Roger D. Shearer, StratoComm Corporation, CEO.
Thousands of tethered aerostat systems are deployed worldwide that support the security, surveillance and telecommunications needs of a broad distribution of military, governmental and private entities. Additional potential applications include mining operation fleet management and data transmission supportive to deep-sea oil field operations. Of these thousands of operating tethered systems virtually all must be taken down from operating status periodically (most often at least weekly) to top-off or otherwise cleanse the helium that provides buoyancy to the system. An aerostat that is capable of continuously replenishing and regulating its internal helium pressure, significantly extends service availability and the operational life of the system.
When tethered aerostat systems used in military theatre operations need to be taken from operation to top-off or otherwise cleanse the helium both personnel and physical assets are placed at risk. The time required to retrieve and re-deploy each system creates a period during which U.S. military personnel do not have the benefit of information flow supportive to their mission and in fact places them in further potential harm.
"Cortland's collaboration with StratoComm is a strategic component in its continuing efforts to remain at the forefront of aerostat tether technology. StratoComm's helium replenishment IP aligns with Cortland's vision of providing technical solutions which allow our customers to maximize performance" said Luis Padilla, Regional VP of Sales and Engineering for Cortland.
StratoComm's core business is delivery of telecommunications services to developing countries and under served areas throughout the U.S. Reliable availability of telecommunications services is critical to consumer needs and so directly impacts StratoComm's ability to sell its revolutionary telecommunications infrastructure technology. This reality was the genesis for StratoComm's helium replenishment design patent.
StratoComm and Cortland have entered agreement under which Cortland will apply its extensive knowledge, experience and know how to design and manufacture an aerostat tether inclusive of StratoComm's patent. Under the agreement's terms Cortland's focus is tether design, testing and production and StratoComm is responsible for the handling system design, pricing and production.
"Success with StratoComm's collaboration with Cortland creates the mechanism through which Cortland will hold exclusive manufacturing and sales rights to the revolutionary tether in exchange for which StratoComm will receive agreed revenues." stated StratoComm CEO Roger Shearer. "Its successful outcome also holds significant promise in telecommunications, defense and homeland security among a host of additional applications."
