"It is a great honor to assume editorial duties for this important publication,"Dominiczak said. "Our goal will be to solidify Hypertension's position as the leading journal for all professionals interested in understanding the pathophysiology, diagnosis, management and impact of high blood pressure, both in the clinic and at the population level."

Dominiczak, who is the first American Heart Association journal editor to be located in Europe, has a strong history of leadership in hypertension research, with a special interest in genetic factors affecting hypertension risk.  Her qualifications include years of editorial experience at several journals, including a term as Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Science.  She has also played active roles in various American Heart Association Committees, including the Leadership Committee.

She has worked at the University of Glasgow since 1992 and is the first woman to hold any of the University's Regius Chairs – positions created by the British monarchy in the UK's ancient universities.  She is responsible for a College with three schools, seven research institutes and an annual research income of $82m.

Cardiologists, internists, and researchers rely on Hypertension for the highest-quality scientific research in blood pressure regulation and the pathophysiology, clinical treatment, and prevention of hypertensive diseases.  In addition to essential clinical and laboratory studies relevant to hypertension, the journal features reviews, commentaries, clinical guidelines, and much more.

Subscribers and readers have access to the journal's expanded online archive, including the complete history of the journal—from 1979 to the present day.

Hypertension's newly enhanced Web site offers a variety of web 2.0 applications, feeds, widgets, and Web services.  Along with advanced search and improved navigation, the site offers a number of enhancements for easy and intuitive browsing and reading, including mobile view access.

All the AHA journal websites now offer mobile view for iPhone and Droid (iOS and Android OS) devices. Support for other mobile devices, such as the Blackberry and other smartphones, will be added in future releases. Designed to streamline the use cases of staying current, the mobile web interface offers quick access to the current issue and archives, a simplified search page, and personalization and authentication.

With an impact factor of 6.908, Hypertension is ranked No. 4 among 66 journals in the Peripheral Vascular Disease Subject Matter Category according to ISI's 2010 Journal Citation Reports® (Thomson Reuters, 2011). The journal's Impact Factor and ranking position it as No. 1 among all hypertension journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports®.  Hypertension is also ranked No. 3 for Immediacy Index, No. 4 for 5-Year Impact Factor and Article InfluenceTM Score, and No. 6 for EigenfactorTM Score.

"Especially with the current emphasis on understanding the molecular and genetic contributions to cardiovascular disease risk, Dr. Dominiczak is a natural choice the guide the future evolution of this essential journal," commented Martha K. Cathcart, Ph.D., Chairperson of the American Heart Association's Scientific Publishing Committee.  "We have no doubt that Dr. Dominiczak and her team will meet the high standard of excellence set by Dr. John E.
