EMS Brings Standardization Process to the Data Center Industry


CHANDLER, Ariz., Feb. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A recent white paper written by Director of Critical Facilities Scott Good of GKK works said Elliptical Mobile Solutions (EMS) is driving data center designs in a manner that is equal to the standardization process that Henry Ford introduced to the car manufacturing industry in the 1920s.

Good wrote the white paper after completing secondary alpha testing on EMS' newest rack-level, container based data center, the R.A.S.E.R. HD.

EMS is the only company in the world to make Micro-Modular Data Centers with onboard closed loop cooling, security, shock and vibration isolation and fire suppression.

Good noted that the data center industry has always been reactive to the needs of IT. "Designs today are developed to make space readily available ahead of the business need and at a great expense to any one industry."

With the R.A.S.E.R. HD, "developing entire data center solutions can now be packaged into standardized deliverable systems. These systems are coupled together on site and brought online, pre commissioned, and burned in from a software readiness standpoint."

Good said, "Micro modular units are constructed to withstand the same impacts as those of a traditional data center and can be distributed across an open slab… These units, as in the design of container units, can be constructed against a distribution and utility spline. The difference between the container and the micro modular design is in the efficiency, scalability and use of space. With the (R.A.S.E.R. HD), there is an ability to ebb and flow capacity from 10kW to 400kW at a time."

Good's testing also demonstrated the R.A.S.E.R. HD is capable of cooling up to 40kW of IT equipment using water temperatures up to 85 degrees F or 29 degrees C due to EMS' proprietary closed loop cooling. The testing was conducted last month at Pentair, an Anoka, Mich. based company focused on water technologies and enclosures for electronic products. (Initial testing on the R.A.S.E.R. HD in October demonstrated the same results, but used IT loads of 20kW).

Good reiterated that the ability to use high temperature water is a major breakthrough as chillers used to cool IT equipment represent 33 to 40% of a data center's energy cost.
