HILLSIDE, N.J., May 23, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- There was a time when "let's do lunch" meant going out to eat. One company is imploring the public to revisit this expression.
LexingtonModern.com, an internet retailer known for its quirky activism on behalf of furniture lovers, wants to tear down the walls.
"Companies want creative-minded people yet expect them to work in boxes" said Moshe Melamed, co-founder of Lexington Modern. "That makes no sense whatsoever."
Melamed isn't just petitioning for a world-wide purge of cubicle-based offices, he is asking that work more resemble our productive leisure hours. "We spend our nights and weekends talking with friends, then we go to work and isolate ourselves for eight or nine hours at a time. We've got to change that."
To promote a community based, open work experience, LexingtonModern.com has begun carrying a line of office ready dining tables. "Young companies are looking to flatten hierarchy and increase collaboration. Communal work tables are a step in the right direction."
When asked why dining tables were selected for this task of workplace liberation, Melamed responded, "Eating is about fostering productive interactions. Sometimes a person needs to chew or deliberate on their work, but even during moments of silence, they are still part of the group."
Tech firms like Google, Foursquare and Color Labs have already adopted table workplaces. If Melamed is correct, expect to see a cultural revolution take over an office near you. Fork and knife not included.
Lexington Modern will be running a special "Table Liberation" weekend sale May 24-27 on their line of workplace dining tables. For more information about the sale, please visit LexingtonModern.com.
