Government of Canada Brings Together Quebec Firms and Two Canadian Shipyards

TROIS-RIVIÈRES, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 1, 2012) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, is keen to see Quebec firms capitalize on the business opportunities presented by the Government of Canada's National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).

"It is essential that the two shipyards selected to carry out the work packages under the Strategy be familiar with Quebec enterprises and their skills and know-how. The meetings initiated by our Government are an excellent starting point for developing long-term business relationships," said Minister Lebel.

In order to help Quebec businesses take advantage of the shipbuilding benefits to come, Canada Economic Development organized two networking and information meetings on future projects with representatives of the selected shipyards.

On September 20, 2012, in Québec, a number of companies were able to familiarize themselves with Irving Shipbuilding of Halifax, the status of the NSPS programs for this yard, which are currently at early stages, and a better understanding of the Company's supply chain principles and expectations. Today, in Trois-Rivières, some 20 Quebec enterprises will have the opportunity to meet representatives of Vancouver-based Seaspan Shipyards. The firms will learn more about Seaspan's projects and requirements and have the chance to showcase their capabilities.

The total value of both packages (combat vessel and non-combat vessel) is $33 billion and the work will span 20 to 30 years. Furthermore, the Strategy will create thousands of highly-skilled jobs across Canada. The contracts will be subject to the Industrial and Regional Benefits Policy.
