ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Nov. 20, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Robert X. Murphy, Jr., MD, assistant chief medical officer at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has been named president-elect of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world's largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons and foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Dr. Murphy took office at Plastic Surgery The Meeting, the Society's annual scientific conference, and will focus on patient safety, advocacy, and public education as president-elect.
"The Society's core purpose is to promote the specialty of plastic surgery and the highest quality patient care and ethics through its role as a patient and physician advocate," said Dr. Murphy. "As president-elect I will help to ensure these principles remain the priority of ASPS and that the Society continues its ongoing effort to inform the public about the benefits and serious nature of plastic surgery, as well as the overwhelming advantages in seeking a board-certified plastic surgeon."
An ASPS Member Surgeon since 1991, Dr. Murphy has served on several committees including ASPS' Public Education, Patient Safety, Government Affairs, Health Policy, and Quality and Performance Measurement Committees. Prior to being named president-elect, Dr. Murphy served on ASPS' board of directors as vice president of Health Policy and Advocacy.
In addition to his current position at Lehigh Valley Health Network, Dr. Murphy is a professor of surgery at Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is also a senior guest examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Passionate about helping wounded veterans in need of reconstructive plastic surgery, Dr. Murphy is a regional volunteer for Project C.A.R.E. (Comprehensive Aesthetic Restorative Effort), a U.S. Naval Medical Center San Diego program that provides surgical and non-surgical care to wounded warriors in an effort to improve appearance and restore function. He also serves on the board of directors for the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council.
Dr. Murphy graduated with his medical degree from New York University in 1982. He completed his internship and junior residency in general surgery at Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston in 1985 and his senior residency in general surgery at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1986. Dr. Murphy completed his plastic surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York, in 1988. He went on to receive a master's degree in health evaluation sciences from Pennsylvania State University in 2003.
Dr. Murphy has been in practice for 23 years and obtained his certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1991. He also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand.
Dr. Murphy has authored 46 publications and two book chapters and is a section editor for "ePlasty," an online journal. He lives in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, with his wife and two daughters.
