SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 11, 2013) - On Sunday, March 10th Brownie Girl Scout Troop 5310 hosted Operation Parent Package for local military families in the community. Operation Parent Package hosted 20 Lincoln Military Housing families to build care packages for soldiers overseas. The event was held at Silver Strand Recreation Center and included lunch and music by a DJ who led fun activities for the kids, a bounce house, massage chairs for the spouses, and more. Families who have a deployed service member were invited to participate in the fun and put together a special care package to send to their loved one.
Brownie Troop 5310 is made up of 12 girls, 10 of whom are military dependents themselves, so they all understand the importance of supporting their fellow military families in the community. The girls wanted to do something nice and give back to the military community. They worked hard and got creative while joining in on the activities and creating the care package items. The Girl Scout Brownie Troop is led by Erin Call who also helped the girls put the entire event together and is a military spouse herself.
The Brownies contacted Lincoln Military Housing and their partnering organizations to support the event. Lincoln sponsored the bounce house, Ohana Catering sponsored the lunch, Sunset Mobile sponsored the music, Girl Scout Headquarters donated cookies for each of the boxes, and Silver Strand Wellness Center hosted massages for the spouses. Brownie Troop 5310 went above and beyond by paying for crafts for the kids, family photo sessions for each family, and the care package items. Cindy Farless, Community Services Director for Lincoln Military Housing and a lifetime member with Girl Scouts stated, "Lincoln Military Housing looks for ways to partner with like-minded organizations such as the Girl Scouts in order to bring programs to our military communities. This was an amazing event for our families who have a deployed service member."
One of the praises received from a family in attendance was, "I just wanted to write a quick note to thank you all again very much for today's awesome event. Everything was so organized, the Girl Scouts were very helpful, the food was great, the weather was perfect, and the activities were enjoyed by everyone. Hosting these events for our kids with a deployed parent, I feel, strengthens the bonds and support they each share during these tough times. What you all did for us today is truly appreciated."
