United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Honors Cosmopolitan for Latinas' Michelle Herrera Mulligan with the "Women in Business and Leadership Award" at 2013 National Convention

CHICAGO, ILL., Sept. 15, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) announced Cosmopolitan for Latinas' Editor in Chief Michelle Herrera Mulligan as this year's recipient of the Women in Business and Leadership Award. The award will be presented during a premier luncheon presented by BMW -- a founding sponsor of this event and longstanding partner of the USHCC – during the 2013 USHCC National Convention in Chicago.

"Michelle Herrera Mulligan's bold work sets a new standard in the minds of young Hispanic women nationwide and across the globe," said USHCC President & CEO Javier Palomarez. "She inspires her audience with an abiding belief that -- against any odds -- they can become the masters of their own fate, and be leaders and decision makers for their communities. We are delighted to honor a prolific author and journalist of her caliber at our convention and look forward to a fruitful partnership with Michelle and Cosmopolitan Magazine going forward."

Each year, this recognition is bestowed upon an entrepreneur, corporate representative, thought leader or elected official whose work is emblematic of the valuable leadership Latinas demonstrate in America, setting an example for all young women. Previous winners include talk show host Cristina Saralegui and world-renowned artist Gloria Estefan.

"This award is a tremendous honor for me," said Michelle Herrera Mulligan, editor in chief, Cosmopolitan for Latinas. "I never imagined being recognized by a group of the most dynamic innovators, CEOs, and entrepreneurs in our community—I feel humbled to even be in their presence! To me, this says that not only Cosmopolitan For Latinas, but also college-educated, professional Latina women in the United States who are reaching to achieve the next level in their life, are being recognized as a vital commodity in our country's economic future. And I couldn't be prouder! As a Mexican-American girl raised right here in Chicago, I will be thrilled to accept the award looking out at my family in the crowd. My abuelita, who sold tamales on 26th street in Little Village, will do enough cheering for everyone! To me, it says that if people like me can have a chance to sit at the table and thrive in the mainstream, anyone can."

Cosmopolitan for Latinas is the leading women's lifestyle publication for Hispanic women. For more than a decade, Ms. Herrera Mulligan has used her platform as an award winning journalist and author to give voice to the most important social issues of our time, including cultural integration, personal development, and what it means to be a Latina in America.

"The USHCC acknowledges Michelle Herrera Mulligan for her formidable accomplishments as a leading professional in her field and our nation's Hispanic community," said Marc Rodriguez, USHCC Chairman of the Board. "The hopes and dreams of millions of young Hispanic women are affirmed everyday through Michelle's achievements, and we are so honored that she will be this year's award recipient."
