American Truck Showrooms Delivers Easter Baskets to Local Children's Shelter

GULFPORT, Miss., April 21, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Truck Showrooms, a Gulfport-based commercial truck rental and sales dealership, ensured that a group of at-risk children had baskets waiting for them this Easter. On Sunday, ATS delivered more than a dozen Easter baskets to boys and girls ranging from a month to sixteen years old to the children's shelter at the Harrison County Youth Court. ATS founder Louie Normand said, "I love seeing people give and help others. So when I heard that the children's shelter didn't have Easter baskets this year, I said, 'Oh my God, we need to get on top of this.' No way could we let them go without. It's Easter; God is with us during this time even more than ever."

The shelter is open twenty-four hours a day and takes in children who have been abused or neglected, or who have run away from home. Staffers not only keep these kids safe, but also try to help them maintain a sense of normalcy with regular trips to school and summertime activities. ATS hopes that getting an Easter basket will help that goal in some small way.

Normand said of his motivations for the delivery, "I grew up Catholic and still practice, but I never wore my religion on my sleeve or spent much time wondering what comes next. There was always too much to do in the here and now. Getting older has humbled me more. No matter how important we think we are, we're just little blips on the screen of time. With the passage of years, when you see that there's a lot more behind you then there is ahead of you, you start praying a little harder, a little more often."

Normand went on to say, "Most of the reason we're on this earth is to help others. Life is where you can make things happen by supporting a worthy cause. Really connecting with others and helping brings a happiness to us that money can't buy. I urge others to open their hearts and give, even if it's just their time. For everything you get, you have to give something back."

The Harrison County Youth Court's shelter was the first of its kind to be established in Mississippi. The shelter stays active twenty-four hours a day and takes in children from birth up to the age of seventeen.
