GainSpan Low-Power Wi-Fi Modules Receive Certifications from Major Regulatory Agencies

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 12, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- GainSpan® Corporation, a leader in low-power Wi-Fi for the Internet of Things (IOT), announced that its ultra-low power GS2000 family of Wi-Fi modules comply with all applicable requirements of the major regulatory agencies. This includes FCC Part 15 type approval (USA), IC certification (Canada), MIC type approval, formerly TELEC (Japan), and ETSI R &TTE, including the new ETSI EN 300 328 v1.8.1 which will take effect on January 1, 2015 (Europe).

Pre-certification of these modules to applicable wireless operating standards around the world reduces development time and simplifies entrance into a given market. This means that customers needing either FCC (USA) or IC (Canada) approval can use the modular certification without having to test for intentional radiation, as long as they use the same configuration that GainSpan has certified. If ETSI (European Union) certification is required, customers can include the GainSpan testing as part of their test plans and thus lower the certification burden. In addition, since the modules are Japan Radio Type certified, if MIC approval is needed, customers can use the GainSpan testing in their application for certification, significantly lowering the time and cost of certification.

"One of the key advantages of using pre-certified modules is the significant cost and burden reduction related to certification," said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing, GainSpan. "While GainSpan is unique in offering our customers the choice of designing their products using our Wi-Fi SoC or modules based on our SoC, we strongly believe that most IOT products should be based on module designs as this significantly accelerates time-to-market and reduces development and certification cost."

With low power consumption and high throughput performance, the newly-certified GS2011M and GS2100M modules open up new markets such as high definition video/security cameras and audio applications such as remote speakers, while still addressing GainSpan's traditional markets in healthcare and fitness, smart energy and control/monitoring in commercial, industrial and residential markets.

The modules are based on the company's GS2000, a dual mode Wi-Fi® (802.11b/g/n) and (802.15.4) SoC. The modules offer high throughput (multi Mbps) via SPI and SDIO interfaces, and low power consumption combined with fast wake up from idle and sleep/standby states for battery-operated designs. They also feature a highly integrated and extensive networking stack that enables them to work with devices using even the most resource-constrained MCUs or devices with no MCU at all.

Certification by these global regulatory agencies ensures that GainSpan's GS2000 modules comply with the essential performance, safety and environmental requirements set by law around the world. In addition to the compliance with the current major regulatory agencies, certifications in other countries will be obtained as needed to meet customer demand.
