UNION, N.J., Jan. 12, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- After a successful one-year pilot test, Deron School will launch a new goal-oriented program called "Great Beginnings" in 2015 that will benefit children with learning disabilities, including those on the autistic spectrum. The pilot program ran throughout the 2014 school year and demonstrated strong results for children with special needs. This research-based and interactive program enables the youngest learners to reach their maximum potential at the most critical stage of their development.
Using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques and a collaborative team approach, Deron ensures students achieve their highest level of independence. The team consists of behavior specialists, certified teachers, social workers, full-time nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, CST members, as well as parents and guardians.
"Through strategically arranged classrooms and one-on-one instruction, the program is proving to be very successful," said Ken Alter, Director of Deron School. "We even created a mock apartment that helps children learn life skills while placed in the appropriate environment. Needless to say, we are very excited to implement Great Beginnings in both of our Union and Montclair schools in 2015."
Great Beginnings' key concepts consist of structured schedules, room arrangement and clear expectations, research-based ABA techniques, positive reinforcement based around individual goals, visual supports, and community-based instruction. The program will also encompass ongoing training for all staff from Board Certified Behavior Analysts at the highly esteemed Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center of Rutgers University.
